Kirby's Inferno - 2D Platformer

Summary

A small girl in Hell finds a taking skull of Kirby the Butler with a ghostly body. Riding piggy-back on the floating ghost they ascend together though the depths while learning more of their joint history. What lies ahead, be it salvation or damnation is up to the player to discover.
Kirby's inferno is a tale about discovery. With inspiration from Dantes inferno the setting is gloomy and dark. The player can levitate to overcome obstacles and in a pinch the girl can throw Kirby's skull at enemies.

Planning the Project

The team started out this project with high ambitions but had a hard time focusing on a USP. Eventually we settled on a three-stage character that would alternate between states. Our ambition with this was to be able to create levels with varied gameplay. We settled on a small statue, fight and flight mode. That would all have their benefits and drawbacks.

Designing the Levels

Me and my co-designer Niklas Briselius settled out to make three levels all with inspiration drawn from Dantes inferno. However technical difficulties with our editor made the project cumbersome forcing us to redesign the level numerous times. With deadlines fast approaching we opted to split the work. Niklas worked with the editor preparing tilesets and enabling me to re-shape the design of the levels. the pipeline was not optimal but we managed to deliver the game in time with all three levels intact.
